From Classroom to Gallery: Julie Jewett’s Capstone Show
The Makerspace at 16 State was honored to showcase the capstone work of Ellsworth High School student Julie Jewett, a graduating senior and member of the EHS Visual and Performing Arts Academy.
Julie’s exhibition represented the culmination of a year-long independent creative project, developed through research, experimentation, critique, and revision. Through the VPA Academy, students are given the opportunity to move beyond traditional classroom assignments and build a body of work that reflects their own creative direction, technical growth, and artistic voice.
A capstone project is more than a final assignment. It is a bridge between learning and becoming. For Julie, presenting her work in a gallery setting marked an important step in sharing her vision with the public and experiencing what it means to prepare, install, and present artwork in a community space.
At 16 State, moments like this are central to what the space is becoming. The Makerspace is not only a place to make, show, sell, learn, and gather. It is also a place where local creativity can be seen, supported, and celebrated at every stage, from students beginning their artistic journeys to established makers sharing their craft with the community.
Heart of Ellsworth is grateful to the educators, mentors, volunteers, and community partners who helped make this exhibition possible. Public gallery experiences give students the chance to build confidence, strengthen presentation skills, and understand how art connects to community life.
Julie Jewett’s capstone show was a meaningful reminder of the talent growing in Ellsworth and the importance of creating accessible downtown spaces where that talent can be shared.
