16 State is a creative space in downtown Ellsworth, operated as a program of Heart of Ellsworth.

The space was created to give artists, makers, small businesses, community groups, and neighbors a flexible place to bring creative ideas to life. It is part of Heart of Ellsworth’s larger work to support a vibrant, active, and connected downtown.

About 16 State

Heart of Ellsworth staff coordinate the day to day work of the space, including rentals, programming, communications, partnerships, and community use. The work is also shaped by Heart of Ellsworth’s board, committees, and community partners who help guide the organization’s downtown focused mission.

How we got here

16 State began with a feasibility study.

Before the space took shape, Heart of Ellsworth explored whether downtown Ellsworth could support a flexible creative space for local artists, makers, small businesses, and community use. The study helped clarify both the opportunity and the need: Ellsworth had creative energy, community interest, and room for a more visible, accessible space in the heart of downtown.

From there, 16 State grew through planning, conversations, and continued community input.
