Seeing the Person: Art, Recovery, and Creative Expression

See the Person, Not the Use: Art in Recovery brought a powerful and deeply human collection of artwork into The Makerspace at 16 State Street.

Created by members of Healthy Acadia’s INSPIRE Recovery Community Center, the exhibition offered an honest look at creativity as part of the recovery journey. Each piece reflected a personal perspective, capturing moments of growth, challenge, hope, healing, and self-expression.

The title of the show carried the heart of the exhibition: See the Person, Not the Use. It asked visitors to look beyond stigma and assumption, and instead recognize the individuality, strength, and humanity of each artist. Through color, image, texture, and personal expression, the work created space for stories that are too often overlooked or misunderstood.

More than a gallery show, this exhibition highlighted the important role creative practice can play in wellness and community belonging. Art can become a way to process experience, explore identity, build confidence, and connect with others. For many, making art is not only about the finished piece. It is also about the act of creating, reflecting, and being seen.

Healthy Acadia’s INSPIRE Recovery Community Center supports individuals and families impacted by substance use and recovery through peer support, education, wellness programming, and community connection. Their work recognizes that recovery is deeply personal and strengthened through dignity, belonging, and opportunities for meaningful engagement.

At The Makerspace at 16 State Street, we believe creative spaces can help make those connections visible. See the Person, Not the Use reminded us that art has the power to open conversations, build understanding, and bring people together with compassion.

We are grateful to Healthy Acadia, INSPIRE Recovery Community Center, and the participating artists for sharing this meaningful exhibition with the Ellsworth community.
